Alumni Support

With significant changes in the size of enrollment, extent of graduate research, and collegiality of the faculty, in 2016 the CHME Department Head restructured the manner in which alumni give of their time to the program to improve efficiency by which the needs of the department are addressed.

  • Through the Industrial Advisory Board, CHME seeks the feedback of appropriately placed alumni for the purpose of assessing program educational objectives (PEDs).
  • CHME also wishes to develop an alumni Academy that will focus on networking alumni with the department, fundraising, and assisting with implementing larger projects.

The outline below provides some basic information about the structure of these two organizations.

Pending schedule for these groups can be found in the menu bar on the right as “Future Assessment Events.”

CHME Industrial Advisory Board (IAB)

Eligibility for the IAB

  1. Hold a BSCHE and have maintained employment for about 5+ years in one of the key industries into which the majority of the graduates of the NMSU CHME program are hired.
  2. Currently employed and regularly work with new engineering grads such that member is cognizant of the needed skill set needed by newly hired chemical engineers in their particular industry and common deficiencies in the students’ preparation to begin working as an engineer.

IAB Objective

Provide feedback to the department head on the relevance of the CHME Department Mission, the Program Educational Objectives, content of the curriculum, and avenues of entry to employment in the industry.

IAB Composition

The IAB will be chaired by the CHME Department Head, who will set agendas and chair the meetings.  The IAB will be composed of 8-12 alumni, all from different companies (if possible) representing a range of focus areas roughly proportional to the primary employment routes of entry into the industry, currently: gas & oil (2); mining; chemicals (2); energy; government (2); food processing; other relevant industry; and medical/legal.  The members will be selected from a pool of interested candidates to cover these proportions as best as possible.

Commitment

The tasks of the IAB should be able to be completed in 3-4 hours. As such, the IAB meeting could be held on Friday or Saturday morning before the homecoming football game (assuming it remains a thing).  Alternatively, the IAB meeting could be held the week of the Career Expo in the fall or the Career Connections in the spring, when many of the alumni recruiters are on campus already.

Industrial Advisory Board

  • I am a BSCHE alum who holds and has maintained employment for approximately 5+ years in one of the key industries into which the majority of the graduates of the NMSU CHME program are hired (chemicals; gas & oil; mining; energy; government; food processing; other relevant industry; and/or medical/legal). I am generally cognizant of the skill set needed by newly hired chemical engineers in my particular industry. I am willing and eager to serve the CHME Department in a consultant capacity as a member of the CHME Industrial Advisory Board.

CHME Academy

Eligibility

An alum of the NMSU Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering.

Objective

The Academy will find CHME alumni (and others) with time, talents, and treasures with which they are willing to support the department, such as funding adjunct instructors, speaking at events, and launching projects within CHME (such as the Seidel Brew Lab).  The ultimate goal of the CHME Academy is to fund a chair in the department.

Commitment

The Academy will develop their own charter and work with the CHME Department Head to schedule meetings as needed to achieve the project objectives defined within the Academy, with input from the Department Head.
