Lithium-ion batteries can be found in most of our electronic devices or in Dr. Meng Zhou’s lab during New Mexico State University’s Aggie Experience.

Prospective students interested in studying chemical engineering toured the CHME department as part of an extensive tour of the NMSU main campus. During the tour, students got to make their own lithium-ion battery, with the help of CHME assistant professor, Dr. Zhou.

“The Lithium-ion battery (LIB) is widely used in cell phones and laptops, it tends to replace the traditional fuels in commercial cars to achieve zero carbon emission,” Dr. Zhou explained.

Dr. Joe Holles, CHME Department head, highlights the importance of hands-on experiments with high school students.

“This provides an opportunity for prospective chemical engineering students to visit our laboratories and participate in an activity connected to our program and their future careers,” Holles said. “You can’t decide to become a chemical engineer until you have experienced what chemical engineers do.”
