Luke Berry Shires was the first professor of Chemical Engineering at NMSU. He graduated from Ohio University in Ada, Ohio on May 28, 1924. It is said that Luke Shires was the first chemical engineer to venture west of the Mississippi River. Shires spent his entire career at NMSU and had a positive impact on many students who came through the program.
Robert Davis (former CEO of Chevron and NMSU CH E alum) put his feelings about Luke Berry Shires in writing.
