There have been some devastating accidents in both laboratories and industry from fires and explosions, so it is important to understand the hazards and learn to mitigate the risks. In this seminar, distinctions between fires and different types of explosions will be discussed along with calculations of flammability limits with regard to mixtures, temperature and pressure. We will also talk about explosion dynamics with wave/blast fronts and the damage caused. Then we will talk about ways to prevent fires and explosions by eliminating the components of the fire triangle and tetrahedron such as inerting, static discharge dissipation through bonding/grounding, ventilation and instrumentation (NEC Class/Div)
