Optical Engineer/Lead Technologist  

Job Description

This integral team member of a small, dynamic company will help transform digital health projects from ideation to manufacturing and actively contribute to the discovery, development and delivery of Rodin’s products. The engineer/technologist will help develop technical solutions to address a wide array of research and development and business needs. Primary responsibilities include: instrument development, testing, and optimization, and project management in both the lab and clinical settings.  The ideal candidate will be a nimble thinker and effective communicator with a penchant for tinkering and hands-on activities. Applicants should be prepared to wear many hats and adapt to fast-paced, collaborative, and innovative environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, test and optimize prototypes for novel optical measurement technologies
  • Collaborate on design of custom data acquisition software and hardware
  • Work with a variety of cross functional groups/consultants (electrical, mechanical engineers, data scientists) to asses and forecast project needs and deliver effective solutions
  • Lead troubleshooting, brainstorming, and problem-solving activities related to system engineering and physiological measurement technologies
  • Design, execute, analyze and interpret experiments to test and characterize system components
  • Acquire physiological data from human subjects in research laboratory and clinical environments
  • Interact closely with human subjects and clinical staff during testing and clinical trials
  • Develop and maintain documentation for component operation, design rationale, specifications, and operating procedures
  • Communicate and document testing results and project progress
  • Create and manage project plans, coordinating activities across consultants and staff
  • Support lab infrastructure, including user accounts, lab equipment, and supplies
  • Perform other duties as necessary

Required Education

Preferred MS or PhD in science, or engineering field with 2+ years hands-on experience in a research or development environment. A BS degree with 5+ years of relevant experience may be considered.

  • Hands-on experience in a research environment

  • Familiarity with systems engineering and integration
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize project goals
  • Ability to train colleagues and transfer knowledge as necessary

Desired Experience/Skills

  • Experience developing optical instrumentation
  • Experience working with human subjects
  • Experience in tissue optics
  • Experience with Matlab, Python or equivalent language
  • Understanding of digital signal and image processing
  • Knowledge of mechanical design and machining
  • Understanding of the cardiovascular system
  • Understanding of project planning and management
