Modern Corn Biorefineries

In preparation for a summer internship, student will complete background readings from textbooks and journal articles to understand the history and state-of-the-art for facilities processing corn.

Completion Objectives:

  • Review background information on corn production, plant chemistry, and harvest.
  • Describe unit operations, reactions and tradeoffs in corn-based biorefineries including starch/sugar and lipid platforms.
  • Compare grain biorefineries to lignocellulosic biorefineries.
  • Compare biofuels from fermentation vs. biofuels from transesterification.
